ISTANBUL, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- A batch of China-made automated driverless trains were put into operation on a new metro line that officially opened to the public on Sunday in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The 34-kilometer metro line connects central Istanbul and the city's new international airport.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the opening ceremony that the trains, which can run up to 120 kilometers per hour, will bring convenience to passengers.

The trains were built by Chinese company CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. (CRRC ZELC), which signed a purchase and commissioning contract with the Turkish side in January 2020.

The contract included the manufacturing of 176 train cars and required a 60 percent localization rate in Türkiye.

The new trains are welcomed by many locals.
